Hebrews 10:35-36 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.
This chapter is perhaps most famous for verse 31, “It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God,” which was the cornerstone of the sermon that sparked the Great Awakening revival in America, back before the Revolutionary War. However, the writer does not stop with that note but goes on to this verse. With the state of America today verse 31 is all too appropriate, but there are many for whom this passage is necessary encouragement. The darker things around us get, and the more turmoil we seem to be in the middle of, the more we need to focus on faithful obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ. This passage assures us such faithfulness will be richly rewarded. The devil, as always, is a liar. (John 8:44) He is forever telling us that it is no use resisting the flood of dissipation and immorality we see around us. On top of that, even in America these days we are seeing the public shaming and loss of property for Christians that are mentioned in verses 33 and 34. The thing to do is always to ask, what is God’s will, and then do it with our whole hearts. As the Japanese expresses it here, “What is necessary to be able to do that is patient endurance.” We must not forget that we are in a battle, but the outcome is already determined, and those who are with Christ, win!
I don’t feel like I have ever suffered particularly for my faith, but I have certainly had to deal with the flood of filth that is so prevalent in modern society. As a pastor I am constantly dealing with people who are being tempted to give up, in one area or another. I need to tell them not to throw away their confidence! One tool the devil uses to trap people is self pity, I was fascinated, and actually encouraged, to see recently that a study of dysfunctional parenting dealt with the issue of self pity on the part of the parents. It has a hugely negative influence. Like the writer here, I need to tell such people, don’t do it! As long as we are focused on ourselves, we won’t receive the abundant supply of everything we need, that God has prepared and promised.
Father, thank You for this clear Word. I certainly need Your wisdom and anointing to communicate it properly. I can think of several people off hand who are in urgent need of grasping this truth, but a lecture isn’t going to do the job. I pray that You would prepare their hearts and that You would prepare me to recognize and make full use of the right opportunity, so that they may be led out of the trap by which the devil that has robbed them of so much, for their blessing and Your glory. Thank You. Praise God!
